My Initial CAPS Proposal

Q: CAPS is a way into something, not out of something. CAPS is a way to investigate an idea or a passion in more detail. What positives do you see coming from this experience?

A: The reason I'm doing CAPS is because I want to follow my passion of helping animals. I know that becoming an animal doctor is a long journey, but that is what I want to do, so I think doing CAPS is going to help me enhance my knowledge on a field that I love, which will benefit me in the future.

Q: Describe your proposed internship. Where will you be interning? If you don't have an internship lined up, what type of internship are you looking into and most importantly, what have done to initiate the process of securing an internship? (Be as specific as possible.)

A: I am hoping to intern at a local animal clinic, shadowing a veterinarian. Since my dream is to become a veterinarian, I think shadowing one would be the best way to maximum my knowledge in this field of work. Recently VCA Rotherwood Animal Clinic in Newton highlands have contacted me and agreed to meet up with me to discuss about this internship. But if Rotherwood doesn't work out, I have other animal clinics I can turn to. My ceramic's teacher's husband owns his own clinic, and my teacher said she would be able to get me an internship either at her husband's clinic, her husband can direct me to a clinic that is willing to take me under their wing. If that doesn't work out either, I can ask Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital or ASPCA in Boston.

Q:Describe how you will efficiently use your time, knowing that there's the official internship hours to satisfy, a web portfolio to work on/build, and a presentation to prepare for. (CAPS internship students are required to participate in a minimum of 25 hours/week.)

A: I will be going to my English, P.E., and Calculus class in the morning during the weekdays. Then after those classes, I will drive to the clinic and serve at least five hours. That mean during the weekdays I will be going to my required classes and completing the minimum requirement of hours/week. If I haven't done so on a weekday, then weekends will be the time for me to work on my web portfolio and build my presentation.

Q: What makes you excited about this internship?

A: I have a feeling this internship will be a new chapter of my life, where I will be having a taste of the future if I choose to still follow the path of veterinary medicine. That alone is pretty exciting for me. But that isn't the only thing I am excited about. I am excited to learn how to take care/handle animals from a professional. I would always google search directions/ articles on how to take care of my pets, but my learning style is learning from a mentor. By doing CAPS, I think I will be able to learn much more than google can ever offer. That is an exciting thought for me.

Q: What are your concerns? (Fulfilling hours? Professional/formal communication?Maintaining a website? Presentation skills? Transportation? Scheduling issues?)

A: Some of my concerns is if I will be able to keep a balance between school work, volunteer work, CAPS, Big Brother Big Sister program, and my job. All of them are equally important to me, so I hope I can fit everything into my schedule.

Q: 11.What classes do you anticipate keeping during your CAPS Internship in addition toEnglish?

A: AP Calculus and possibly AP Stats. My AP Stats is during F block currently, which means if I want to keep it, I would either have to move to another Stats class that starts earlier in the day, or I would have to drop AP Stats. Currently I am unsure what I am going to do about AP Stats, but I know for sure I will be continuing AP Calculus.

Q: What commitments do you have during the 2nd semester? (Please be specific. Include plans for travel (personal or school sponsored trips/exchanges), sports, theatre, musical groups, etc.)

A: During the 2nd semester I will be committed to the Big Brother Big Sister program. I am required to spend a minimum of 2.5 hours every week with my assigned little sister. I will also be committed to my job as a cashier at Whole Foods.

Q: Please describe any experience(s) you've had that have helped prepare you for this. (List work and/or volunteer experience. Describe any background or prior knowledge you have with this topic. Or explain why you are interested in this completely new topic.)

A:I volunteer at Gifford Cat Shelter near Boston College. I would spend my Saturday working with cats. I am in a special program that helps super shy cats become more social and mentally stable, so that they can be adoptable. My volunteer work has taught me how to be calm around tense animals. I think this skill will come in handy when I will be in close proximity with animals at the clinic.
